Segmented sculptures are made from a number of segmented "rings" which are tapered to an angle.
Each ring has a slight twist relative to the adjacent rings to cause a spiraling effect within the piece.
No two sculptures are made alike. Each piece is truly one-of-a-kind.
I may make a similar shape in another wood, and I often will use similar wood for more than one shape.
However, I do not make more than one sculpture of a given shape and combination of wood.
For more information on the construction of segmented sculptures, see the
resources page.
Also shown on this page are several other sculptures that have a common theme of
balance and motion.

"Through the Looking Glass"
26" High
Wood: Figured Bubinga
Base: Black Granite
If you gaze through this piece long enough, the spiraling effect of the interlocking rings
will seem to draw you into the "window".
There are 192 pieces of wood in this sculpture.
"Tree of Life"
27" High
Wood: Bubinga and black veneer
Base: Black Belgium Marble
There are 1920 pieces of wood in this segmented sculpture. The black veneer pieces cause a gentle spiral
on both sides of the loops.
"Eye of the Storm"
30" High
Wood: Bubinga
Although the cross-section of this sculpture is a triangle, the addition of a 1/3 twist in the ring
causes there to be only one side to the piece. There are 192 pieces of wood in the sculpture.
"Double Donut"
21" High
Wood: Monterillo and black veneer
Base: Black Belgium Marble
There are 1280 pieces of wood in this segmented sculpture. The black veneer pieces cause a gentle spiral
on both sides of the loops.
"Saturn"
19" High
Wood: Maple Burl
Base: Imbuya
Turned from a solid piece of burl wood, the piece is perfectly balanced and suspended by a thin stainless steel cable.
The cable is attached at the balance point at the center of the inner "ball".
This allows the piece to appear to float in space and gently rotate.
The mounting ring is made from laminated strips of bent wood (Imbuya) that are glued together into a curved shape.
"Ring World"
15" High
Wood: Buckeye Burl
Base: Wenge
The solid sphere is Buckeye Burl. Hand-made metal bearings allow
the sphere to rotate in all directions within the rings.
